Do you own Prophecies now so you know what the game is like? If so then I'd say get Factions as well, it is worht it and more so if you like the look of the ritualist.
If you haven't played GW yet I'd say get Nightfall and try it out and then if you like it start adding on chapters. |

Well, there aren't many people playing right now... especially in the later areas of the game. You could have trouble getting a group.
That said, I found Factions quite a bit of fun. It's a fast play; it only gets a little annoyingly repetitive during some of the Kaineng City quests/missions.... But all in all, I say...not a waste...but not the bestest investment ever. Buy it, hench your way to Kaineng City, and then move your rit to Nightfall. |

You don't need Prophecies to play. You would have to beat some mission before going to Elona, but only like the first two.

Prophechies, Factions, Nightfall are all stand alone games. You don't need one to play the others. If you want to make a rit, you will need to buy Factions. If you do make a rit, all you have to do is finish the starter island missions/quest and get to mainland. Once you're there, you can head to Nightfall. There are 2 missions on starter island.

No, each chapter is stand alone and can be played on its own. Each gives you access to one continent (Prophecies {original GW} = Tyria, Factions = Cantha, Nightfall = Elona), professions and skills. Gear can be acquired from any chapter and used, except for armor which each character must acquire individually. The PvP Battle Isles are common to all chapters as are the Realms of the Gods for high-end PvE play.
There is a port in the first 1/2 of the game in each chapter that you can use to take a ship to the other ports for whichever chapters you have added to your account. I'd still recommend trying out Nightfall first and then deciding if you want to add Factions and/or Prophecies. All 3 are good. |

I'll also add that Factions is an excellent chapter for PvP oriented players, and complements the PvE of Nightfall well. Having both would offer a well rounded GW experience, and give access to all ten professions.
I've created characters in all three chapters, and from my perspective it seems much easier, or at least noticeably faster, to level up a character and get to max armor/items with Factions than with the other two. It would take about a day of play at an average pace to start a Ritualist and get them through to Nightfall. Hardcore players could do it in a few hours. |

On a gameplay note, getting to level 20, will only nab you 170 attribute points. To get the remaining 30 involves 2 quests in Factions that you might not be bothered doing. In Nightfall, you also get them through 2 quests, but they require a lot less effort.
On a personal level though, I think Factions has the most gorgeous environments of the three chapters. The art direction is just immense in scale, the colours are rich (except for the undercity), and the armor sets look great. I would suggest getting Factions too. The price isn't too high, and it is nice to revisit the older chapters. If it makes any difference, it is MUCH easier to play from Nightfall backwards than to play from Prophecies forward. Heroes |

Factions is a really good game, but unfotunatly, it isn't the most friendly of games to newer players. However, Prophecies and Nightfall are plenty friendly to newer players, so I suggest get one of those first, and if you like it, get Factions.
Also, Nightfall has heros (which you can't have in the other two unless you have Nightfall), Nightfall has two special classes that the other two don't have, and there are currently more people in Nightfall, so I'd say you should get Nightfall first. And as Santra said, Factions' attribute point quests are sort of out of the way, and Prophecies' ones are even more out of the way (plus you get them towards the end of the game unlike the other two), but in Nightfall you almost have to do those quests. In short, get Nightfall or Proph (preferably Nightfall) and play that. If you like GW, then get Factions. |
